Click on each section to access helpful resources for middle grades students. 
 
The following is a list of learning resources for families and children that may be accessed for free while we experience school closures.
 
  • Abdo Digital - Offers free access to ebook collections. Most books are non-fiction and classical works.
  • myOn - Allows students to have unlimited, free access to more than 6,400 digital books through the myON digital library during school closures. 
  • Mystery Science - Lessons that inspire kids to love science. During school closures, popular science lessons are being provided for anyone to use for free. No account or login needed.
  • Prodigy - Offers engaging, curriculum-aligned math platform designed to motivate 1st – 8th-grade students to learn and practice math.
  • Scholastic Learn at Home - Provides all students with 20 days worth of learning journeys, including projects, articles and stories, virtual field trips, reading and geography challenges, and more. Does not require a username or password.
  • Science Flix - Engages students' interest in a variety of science topics, including science in the news, through a variety of text and videos. To access, scroll down to Science Flix, the last resource listed. 
 
Through the Gwinnett County Public Library, every student at BMS has access to a variety of additional online resources. Below is a sampling of the resources they offer, however, families can browse the close to 100 digital resources by clicking here for access to all of their Digital Resources. Please note that many of these resources are geared towards offering a K12 collection, meaning that some content may not be appropriate for all ages.
 
Temporary Resources:
  • AudioBookCloud - Provides streaming audiobooks are for all ages. There are links at the top to separate Children’s from YA and a few other categories. 
  • Big Timber Media - Provides four different collections, categorized by grade levels. Please note, the Grades 9-12 collection is available and includes some titles that address LGBTQIA+ topics as well as diversity and differing perspectives. These ebooks do not have accompanying audio.
  • Junior Library Guild @ Home - Includes Middle School Stream eBooks, and some are eAudiobooks. Please note the different expiration dates on the eBooks and eAudiobooks, so check each one to see when it expires--it may be before June 30. 
  • Lerner Books - Offers a collection for grades 6-12, many of which also have accompanying audio. Families may use the filters on the left to determine the reading level or interest level and click the red Apply Filter button at the bottom.
  • Sebco Ebooks - Includes fiction as well as nonfiction for all age levels, many titles published in 2019 and 2020. A young adult collection comprised mostly of classics as well as including some Britannica titles on math and science. Please note the username and password are embedded in the link. Use 1 as the student id to access the free books. 
  • TeenBookCloud - Offers newer fiction, the classics, and graphic novels. In this resource, the Enhanced eBooks offers the user the option of changing the background color and font color to make the ebooks easier to read for those dealing with visual or learning challenges. 
  • Tudor.com - Gwinnett County Public Library has acquired access to Tutor.com to assist students who are learning remotely due to measures put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Students may access one on one tutoring in any math, science, social studies, and English subject. 

 
Permanent Resources:
  • All Gwinnett County Public Library eBooksOffers access the entire collection of ebooks available through Gwinnett County. Here is a tutorial for accessing this collection as well as a quick-start guide for setting up the Libby app for easy access on devices. 
  • Ancestry Library Edition - Includes access to a variety of documents to help families trace their family heritage.*
  • eRead Kids - Provides a resource similar to the eBooks we have available in Destiny. Students may have to place holds and wait for a title to become available.*
  • Mango Language - Offers online instruction for learning over 70 different languages. Please note that you will need a GALILEO password to access this resource, and then you will need to set up an account.
  • The New York Times Online - Includes Basic Digital access to The New York Times and lesson plans. Click Redeem, follow instructions for creating an account (if you do not already have one), then use the search tool to search “lesson plans.” Remember, you’ll have to visit the link above every 72 hours to regain access.

  • BrainPopProvides an engaging learning environment through games, activities, and videos to supplement student learning from the classroom
  • Funbrain - Provides interactive content, with hundreds of free games, books, and videos
  • Gimkit - Creates competition via a classroom game-show platform where students compete by answering questions on their electronic devices
  • Kahoot - Assists students in reviewing through a game-based learning platform for all subjects, in any language, on any device
 
Gwinnett County Public Library

  • Gwinnett County Public Library - All BCSS students have to access the library system’s print collection, research materials, digital resources, audiobooks, language learning, and so much more
  • Literary Analysis Guide - Helps students visualize how the elements of literature develop style and meaning (Apple & Android)

MATH:
  • Buzz Math - Designed for K12 education with over 7, 000 activities derived from the Common Core State Standards
  • IXL - Offers personalized learning for math and language arts, allowing students to practice current, review past, or preview upcoming curriculum
  • Khan Academy - Offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom
  • Quizizz - Free self-paced quizzes to review, assess, and engage—in class and at home
  • SchoolYourself - Offers free interactive lessons from award-winning Harvard instructors

SCIENCE:
  • Discovery Education - Offers a variety of highly engaging professionally created digital resources including instructional videos, images, and audio clips from partners like MythBusters, NBA, Reuters, and Shark Week
  • Jet Propulsion Laboratory - Working with NASA, the JPL guides budding scientists in discovering more about robotic exploration of space

SOCIAL STUDIES
  • Google Earth - Takes students on virtual field trips where they can see the political borders and satellite images of the exciting places they are studying (Apple & Android)
  • Hidden Worlds of National Parks - Developed by Google, allows virtual trips to some of the lesser-traveled, yet still majestic, national parks
  • New Georgia Encyclopedia- Designed exclusively for online environments with over 2,300 articles and 6,600 images specifically for Georgia
  • Sheppard Software - Designed for students to play geography games where they gain a mental map of the world's continents, countries, capitals, and landscapes
  • 8th Grade Georgia Studies
    • GPB Georgia Studies Collection - Brings an innovative, interactive experience to telling the story of Georgia’s history, culture, and geography
    • GPB Online Textbook - Offers a variety of standards-based content to complement the 8th-grade social studies curriculum
    • Virtual Law Museum - Provides resources of court cases at the state and national levels
 
RESEARCH SKILLS
  • Citation Creator - Assists students in creating citations in the MLA format for books, magazines, websites, journals, etc.

  • Photos for Class - Access royalty-free and safe images that are available to be used in the classroom and for educational purposes
 
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS:
  • Evernote - Allows students to write notes of all types and access them on any device. Students can also collect web articles, handwritten notes, and photos to keep all the details in one place. (Apple & Android)
  • Google Drive - Allows students to keep all of their files saved in "the cloud" and access them from anywhere or on any device. (Apple & Android)
  • myHomework Student Planner - Works as a school organizer that helps keep track of assignments and due dates. (Apple & Android)

  • Flocabulary - Offers a wide library of songs, videos and activities for K-12 online learning using educational raps
  • Free Rice - Gives quiz questions where every correct answer donates 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger
  • Membeam - Provides practice using the game-like format and engaging content such as audio, video, and word pictures
